# Workshop on Cybersecurity R&D Grand Challenges in the Kingdom

The Center of Excellence in Information Assurance (CoEIA) organized a workshop on “Cybersecurity R&D Grand Challenges in the Kingdom” on 25 February 2019 at King Saud University. The event was sponsored by the International Scientific Partnership Program (ISPP) of the Deanship of Scientific Research (DSR), KSU. It aimed to gather researchers and practitioners to present and discuss cybersecurity R&D grand challenges in Saudi Arabia, and to shed light on current research in areas such as cloud and fog computing, IoT, big data and AI.

In the opening ceremony, Dr. Jalal Almuhtadi, Director of CoEIA, welcomed the audience and gave a brief presentation on the mission, ambition, services and outcomes of the Center. The chief guest, Prof. Ahmed Alaameri, Vice Rector for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at KSU, underscored the value of such scientific events in building synergy and exchanging knowledge for the betterment of society.

The ceremony was followed by the celebration of CoEIA's 10th anniversary (2009 to 2019), in which former CoEIA Directors and Deputy Directors were honored by Prof. Alaameri.

Session 1, chaired by Dr. Farrukh Aslam Khan (CoEIA, KSU), opened with a keynote on “Challenges and Perspectives for Internet of Things” by Prof. Joel Rodrigues, Professor at the National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), Brazil, and Visiting Professor at King Saud University. Dr. James Shires (Harvard University), Dr. Fatma Alrayes (Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University) and Dr. Adel Ali Ahmed (King Abdulaziz University) then presented their research on different areas of cybersecurity.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Kashif Saleem (CoEIA, KSU) brought together Prof. Joel Rodrigues (Inatel, Brazil), Prof. Muhammad Khurram Khan (CoEIA, KSU), Dr. Loai Alomari (Innovative Solutions, KSA) and Dr. Ma Qiang (MIS, KSU) to discuss how to secure the Kingdom's cyberspace from academic and industry perspectives. Session 2, chaired by Dr. Abdelouahid Derhab (CoEIA, KSU), featured talks by Dr. Nouf Aljaffan and Dr. Fatimah Alakeel (KSU).

Dr. Kashif Saleem concluded the event with the workshop's recommendations. The workshop was attended by a large audience from academia, industry and the public and private sectors. It was the third edition of an annual series: the previous edition was co-organized with the UK Gulf Science, Innovation and Knowledge Economy Programme (GSIKE), and the one before with KAUST.
